Original, hand-made, limited-edition prints of Notorious BIG.
This piece is part of a series called the Chroma Chronicles, as you may be able to tell from the name, it was a colourful endeavour developed to celebrate the classic 90’s hip hop icons.
Every artwork starts with a foundation of watercolour, ink pens, and spray paint to set the mood. From there, I let the music guide me. While I work, their tracks play on repeat, finding their way into the composition as symbols, hidden words, and visual nods woven throughout the page.
In this piece you’ll notice the upside down Statue of Liberty with swirly eyes which is a small reference to the classic “Hypnotize”, there are other nods to “Who Shot Ya?” and lyrics ‘Being high as motherfuckin’ helicopter’ from “Machine Gun Funk”.
The finer details are refined in using digital painting techniques, weaving narratives embedded in his hip hop persona, infusing the exaggerated style of comic-book characters, with the raw etchings and candy colours of street art. The end result is a loose chroma wash, balanced carefully with words and imagery behind the figure, creating a vibrant, harmonious piece ready for your home.
